Monty was born and raised in Norfolk, VA. He was awarded his mechanical engineering degree at Virginia Tech in 1958. He was drafted in to the army and spent 2 years in a special operations in Kinston, NC. He began working at the Newport News, VA Shipyard in 1960 and simultaneously earned his masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and his MBA at Old Dominion University. He was transferred to Jacksonville, FL in 1972 to begin working at Offshore Power Systems. He spent a short time in Pensacola with Westinghouse, and then moved back to Jacksonville to be the President of the Charter Oil Company’s Riffe Petroleum. He was part owner of the Environmental Recovery Group. and, he retired as the Executive Vice President and CFO from Florida Rock Industries in 2000.
Monty was a devoted family man. He adored his wife of 61 years, Sally, his four children, Mike, Tricia, Chris, and Billy, eight grandchildren, Reed, Katie, Drew, Kyle, Emily, Corey, Michele, and Joey, and one great-granddaughter, Evelyn. He loved the beach and spending time with the family there, especially the week at the Ponte Vedra Club every July 4th. He became a Catholic convert after 25 years of marriage, and a dedicated member of Resurrection Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, and recently a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Socially he was member of the Meninac Club. He enjoyed sailing in his youth, and took his girlfriend, Sally on sailing dates. He also was an excellent bridge player and champion checkers player, an avid tennis player, golfer, a huge Virginia Tech fan, and proud to be a Hokie!
He had an amazing ‘dry’ sense of humor, was very quick witted, he always knew when and what to say that made people laugh easily. He was perpetually kind and pleasant to be around, he made many, many friends over the years, and he was well respected and absolutely loved by all.
Monty was predeceased by his father, Harry Horner, his loving mother, Meryl Elizabeth Horner Cothran, his step-father Joseph Nelson Cothran, his brother, Philip Forrest Horner, and his sister, Lynda Cothran. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sally Patricia Swoope Horner, son Michael Belmont Horner (Diane), his daughter, Patricia Lynne Horner Hawkins (David), son, Christopher Joseph Horner (Kimberly), and son, William Forrest Horner, grandchildren, David Reeder Hawkins, Katie Elizabeth Horner Penny (Tres), Andrew Belmont Hawkins, Kyle Christopher Horner, Emily Lynne Hawkins, Corey Belmont Horner (Taylor), Michele Elizabeth Horner, and Joseph Belmont Horner, and great-granddaughter Evelyn Belmont Penny.
Monty’s memorial service will take place Wednesday, June 5th 2024 at 11am. A visitation in the narthex will be at 10am and a reception will follow the service at St. Matthews Catholic Church 1773 Blanding Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32210. The burial service will be at 3pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
