George Austin Lockhart passed away on July 16, 2024. George was born in Aurora, Illinois, July 12, 1939 to Milton Pieratt Lockhart and Irene Virginia Baker Lockhart. George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rebecca Jane Ellington Lockhart of Russellville, AR, two children, Tamara Dean Fesco (James Fesco) of Jacksonville, FL and Greggory Milton Lockhart (Donna) of Columbia, SC. George is also survived by five grandchildren, Taylar Morgan Likes (Aaron Douglas Likes) Caleb Fesco, Merry Turner, Austin Lockhart, Jennifer Jennison and seven great grandchildren, Caitlin Cofer, Richard Cofer, Carson Cofer, Greggory Cofer, Adelaide Jennison, Alexandria Jennison, and Issac Turner. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Elizabeth Abbott, Salinas, CA and Joyce Gwendolyn Farris, Durham, NC.
He graduated from Prairie Grove High School (AR) in 1957 and the University of Arkansas in 1962 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served two years active duty and 28 years in the Army Reserve retiring after 30 years as a Colonel. George worked for the Corps of Engineers in Litte Rock, AR and Jacksonville, FL. He retired as Chief, Design Branch, from the Jacksonville District in 2000 having a career spanning 38 years. In 2002 he was included in the Jacksonville District’s Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees.
George was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, serving the Jacksonville Chapter as President, Secretary, Treasurer and Registrar since 2001. He served as Recording Secretary for the Florida Society, Sons of the American Revolution in 2005-2006. He was also a member of the Richard Warren Colony, Society of Mayflower Descendants; the Somerset Chapter Magna Charta Barons; the Plantagenet Society; the Colonial Order of the Crown.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday August 3, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Hospice of Northeast Florida. A Committal Service with Full Military Honors will be held on Thursday August 8, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
