George William Carter Sr.

George was born in Adel, GA on January 6, 1921 and married the love of his life, Faye Catherine Whiddon, on March 28, 1941 and they left on the Greyhound bus for Jacksonville that very night. He worked for A&P Bakery. At the age of 20 he was baptized at the Fellowship Church on Pearl Street. He served as a Marine during World War II eventually being stationed in Japan where he became fluent in Japanese. He loved to entertain his family, friends and acquaintances with his Japanese songs and phrases. He was later called back to active duty to serve in the Korean War. Returning home, he began a long career with the Railway Express Agency retiring in 1971. Being the hard worker that he was he started his second career as an outside salesman for Trad’s Nurseries. Starting as a one-man sales force and retiring at the age of 91 with a fleet of many service vehicles and salesmen.

He was a former member of Lake Forest Baptist church where he taught Sunday school and was ordained a deacon. After moving to the Mandarin area in 1979 he joined Mandarin Baptist Church where he proudly ran the welcome center for 37 years.

He was predeceased by his mother, Annie Lou Montgomery; his father, Newt Samuel Carter, and his wife of 70 years, Faye Whiddon Carter. He loved his family dearly and carried pictures with him to show how proud he was of them.

He is survived by his son, George W (Billy) Carter, Jr. (Linda); daughter, Sandra Faye Scott (John); 3 grandchildren, Alan Jackson (Sherri), Sonja Burden (Randy), Tracy Cruce (John); six great grandchildren, Stephanie Powers (Gabe), Jeremy Jackson (Brooke), Zachary Jackson, Randal Burden (Lindsey), Camryn Burden, Baylie Cruce and seven great great grand children, Trevor, Bentley, Bryce, Harper, Gaxson, Wyatt, Savannah and sister-in-law, Martha Jackson.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Wyndham Lakes assisted living facility for their care and love for him the last ten months and to Community Hospice the last five months.

Memorials can be made in George’s name to Mandarin Baptist Church Building Fund or Community Hospice of Jacksonville.

Due to Covid-19, private services will be held for George. Once restrictions have been lifted, a Celebration of George's life will be held at a later date, to be announced.
