David Freeman Waugh

David Freeman Waugh, 69, passed away on June 5, 2020. After surviving cancer and years of heart disease, he died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. David was the beloved husband of Marilyn (DiMario) Waugh and proud father of daughter Heather Waugh Lober (Michael), and sons Matthew Waugh (Amy), and Mark Waugh (Susan).

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on January 23, 1951, David was the son of the late Warner Waugh and the late Audrey (Holloway) Waugh, brother to Carleton (Candace), Bryan, and Richard (Linda) Waugh.

David enlisted the U.S. Navy and retired after twenty years having attained the rank of YN Senior Chief. He graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and was a Surface Warfare Specialist. He received many awards in the U.S. Navy including Sailor of the Year, Commendations and Navy Achievement Medals. David continued his education at Florida Community College obtaining an Assocciates of Arts degree.

After retiring from the Navy, David worked as Assistant to the Tax Collector of Duval County for twenty-two years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary.

As a youth, David excelled in sports and is still remembered for pitching a no-hitter in Senior Little League. In the Navy, Dave continured his athletics in baseball, softball, and racquetball. Dave instilled in his children the love of sports and coached their baseball, softball and soccer teams.

In addition to sports David loved traveling to many countries all around the world. He loved being social and making new friends. His deep care and concern for people made him loved by all.

David's dedication and love for family was an inspiration to all. In addition to his wife and children, David had nine grandchildren, Samantha, Brittany, Ashley, Megan, Hailey, Hannah, Ethan, Isabelle (deceased) and Tylor. He also had one great-grand daughter, Mackenzie.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 9401 Staples Mill Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32244. Burial with military honors in the Jacksonville National Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
