Clyde Hammond Montgomery, Jr. was born December 13, 1940 and passed away peacefully in Jacksonville, FL on August 26, 2024 at 83 years old. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, O’Neil G. Montgomery, sons Richard W. and Alan R. (Sheri), grandchildren, Graham M. and Bailey M, brothers Kenneth G. Montgomery, Vernon R. Montgomery, and John W. Montgomery, and a sister, Judy C. Montgomery. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Marjorie Elizabeth Walker and Clyde Hammond Montgomery, Sr.
Clyde graduated from Landon High School in 1958 where he led the Landon Lions Marching Band as drum major. He was also an accomplished trumpeter. Directly after high school graduation Clyde joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as Corporal until November 1962. After the Cuban Crisis in 1962 Clyde was honorably discharged with the Good Conduct Medal. It was in Jacksonville, NC where he met his bride of 63 years, O’Neil Gray; they were married on base June 17, 1961.
After discharge from the Marines, Clyde and O’Neil moved to his hometown of Jacksonville, FL. There he worked for WFGA/WTLV – TV-12 News as TV News Editor and reporter for 11 years. It was at WFGA/WTLV where Clyde interviewed The Beatles! From there, Clyde joined the JEA where he served as Vice President of Public Information until he retired in 1999 after 26 years of service.
Clyde is a member of Southside Baptist Church/Aspire Church in San Marco. Donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Community Hospice of Jacksonville.
A visitation for Clyde will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Aspire Church San Marco, 1435 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM. Immediately following the funeral, Clyde Hammond Montgomery Jr. will be laid to rest at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
