Beverly Gerregano Everett, age 92, passed away Sunday, January 21 at the McGraw Community Hospice Center after a long illness. She was born September 6, 1931 in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Augusta (Dolly) Saunders Gerregano and Herman Seymour Gerregano.
She graduated from Isaac Litton High School, Nashville, TN in 1949, where she earned many accolades for her academic activities. Beverly won the Westinghouse Talent Search for the state of Tennessee which afforded her a four year scholarship. Beverly set her sights on earning an engineering degree at Vanderbilt University. She was one of the first two women in the engineering school and she pursued a degree in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation in 1953, she was hired by Union Carbide Nuclear Company in Oak Ridge, TN. She was the first to get a job and at a higher salary than the men in her class.
Beverly met Charlie Everett her first day of her freshman year. Charlie was her true love and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage. After Charlie graduated from the University of Tennessee, they had Elise and Win. Charlie’s job with UNIVAC transferred them to Jacksonville, FL in 1960. In 1965, Beth was born.
In 1966, there was a teacher shortage in Duval County and Beverly felt that it was time to give back for the opportunity she received for her education. Beverly began teaching Math at Terry Parker High School where she taught thousands of students over the course of 25 years and she shared her love for mathematics. She saw a need for a math course for seniors, she created Senior Math along with a textbook that was adopted by the state and can be found in the Library of Congress. This class and textbook taught all the essential math needed in the adult world. It was a popular course. She sponsored National Honor Society but the Brain Brawl team competition was among her proudest accomplishments. Beverly was awarded the Duval County Teacher of the Year in 1983. She retired in 1991 and often said that she ”loved every day at Terry Parker.”
Beverly was a longtime member of Terry Parker Baptist Church and spent many years as an adult Sunday School teacher. Retirement afforded her the opportunity to do other things she loved: being with her grandchildren, quilting and traveling with Charlie. Perhaps her favorite activity was teaching the Monday morning Bible study at Cypress Village for over 15 years.
Beverly is predeceased by her husband Charles Everett, her parents and her brother H.S. Gerregano, Jr. She is survived by her brother Robert Gerregano, and her children Elise Polito (Dr. Matthew), Win Everett (Karen) Beth Schmidt (Dr. Raymond), five grandchildren Rev. Courtney Stevens, Dr. Sarah Schmidt Cooper (Travis), Alex Everett (Elizabeth), Raymond Schmidt, Jesse Everett and three Great-Grandsons Andrew Everett, Milo Everett and Tatum Everett Cooper.
