Bernice G. "Bunny" Scott, age 91, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at The Village in Gainesville, Florida. Bunny was born Bernice Augusta Goode in Gainesville, Florida on October 21, 1926. She was the daughter of Loring Lucien Goode and Cordelia Crown Goode, who owned a dairy farm. Upon graduating from Gainesville High School, Bunny attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. After earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business with honors in 1946, she spent two and a half years as understudy to the administrative manager of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Florida. In 1949, Bunny joined Black Laboratories, Inc. (later Black, Crow and Eidsness, Inc.) which merged with CH2M Hill in 1977. She was District Director of Human Resources for its 16 offices east of the Mississippi and retired in 1987 after 38 years. She was a real “people person” and often boasted she had the best job in the world. She enjoyed square dancing and traveling. She and her late husband, James Whiteman, served as presidents of the North Florida Square Dance Association and later presidents of the Florida State Square Dance Federation. They attended many state festivals as well as the national conventions. It was through square dancing that she met and later married James F. Scott, Sr. in 1987. They lived in Jacksonville, Florida and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. As a homemaker, Bunny was a skillful cook and loved to entertain guests. She was also active in Altrusa International, served a couple of two-year terms as circle president of the Mandarin Garden Club, a three-year term on the Vestry of San Jose Episcopal Church, and a three-year term on the 440-student school board at the church.
Bunny was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Scott, Sr. She is survived by her sister, Lorraine G. Eddy of Gainesville, Fla.; niece, Susan Nalbandian; nephews, Randall Eddy and Harold Eddy; great-nieces, Zabel Thur de Koos and Laura Eddy; great-nephews, Zac Eddy and Kyle Eddy; great-great nephew, Paul Thur de Koos V; great-great niece, Alexis Thur de Koos; and her late husband Jim’s children, Jim Scott, Jr., Margie Scott Stormes, Bob Scott, and Laurie Scott Austin; grandchildren, Ryan and Jeff Scott, Shannon Nunley, Kristie Bliss, Elizabeth and Wilson Scott, Maggie, James, and Andrew Austin; great grandchildren, Brook and Blake Scott, Addison and Alyssa Nunley, and William Bliss.
Visitation will be Monday, December 4, 2017 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave. in Jacksonville, Florida. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in San Jose Episcopal Church, located at 7423 San Jose Boulevard in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to San Jose Episcopal Day School.
