I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
Barbara McLanahan Granger, 88, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on
November 13, 2024. She was born Barbara Jean McLanahan on June 18, 1936 in Atlanta,
Georgia. She moved frequently as a child due to her father’s job, living in Georgia, Tennessee,
Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia, some places more than once. She graduated from
Columbia High School in Columbia, SC in 1954. That same year, she moved with her family to
Norfolk, VA, where she became a private secretary to an army captain. The following year, she
moved to Charleston, SC, where she worked as a legal secretary to a former U.S. Congressman.
On September 8, 1956, she married Marion Granger and moved to Miami, FL, where she had
her two children. Finally, she moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1974, where she worked as a claims
clerical supervisor and then office manager’s assistant at Home Insurance Co. She worked as
an office manager for Air Systems, Inc., Heating and Air, from 1983 until she retired in 2001.
She was a Notary Public from 1981 to 2001.
Barbara always prided herself in her typing and shorthand skills. She was also highly skilled at
sewing, taking after her mother, an accomplished seamstress. Barbara made her own dresses,
her daughter’s dresses, and her daughter’s doll clothes. She loved cooking for her family, being
a homemaker, and volunteering at church and school. She was Vice President and Treasurer
of the PTA, and Treasurer and Deaconess at her church. She spent her time at church and
enjoying quality time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Above all, Barbara was a devout Christian. She was raised in the Methodist Church. She loved
the Lord and attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for most of her adult life.
She also attended Merrill Road Baptist Church and Calvary Christian Fellowship. She prayed
daily and led many of her grandchildren to accept the Lord as their Savior.
After selling her home in 2011, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law for the remainder of
her life. Some of her favorite pastimes were spending time with family, reading her Bible,
listening to Christian television and music, watching the ducks on the lake, watching golf and
football, coloring, and word search puzzles. She cherished her children, grandchildren, and
great grandchildren who called her Granny.
Goodness and mercy surely followed her all the days of her life (Psalm 23:6).
Barbara was predeceased by her father, Howell McLanahan, her mother, Hazel Black
McLanahan, and her brother, James “Jimmy” McLanahan. She is survived by her daughter,
Linda Granger Wisser, her son-in-law, Charles Edward Wisser, her son, Glenn Howell
Granger, her 7 grandchildren, Ryan Stillson, Heather Rose, Amber McCormick, Kevin Wisser,
Angela Cookston, Deanna Eagerton, and Timothy Granger, and 13 great grandchildren.
