He was born on March 30, 1933 in Miami, FL to Clyde and Grace Pumphrey. He moved to Jacksonville in 1946. Tom graduated from Robert E. Lee High School , class of 1951 and graduated from Jacksonville University in the first 4 year graduation class, 1959.
Prior to retirement Mr. Pumphrey was Assistant Manager with Astor Products, a subsidiary of Winn Dixie, for 33 years.
He was a member of the United States Tea Association, where he met with other tea producers from many countries. Pat & Tom enjoyed frequent travels abroad and were fortunate to have friends in these countries.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia “Pat” Rogers Pumphrey , three daughters, Sara Pumphrey Margeson (Kevin) of Lakeland, F; Elizabeth Pumphrey Wells (Tom) of Tallahassee, FL and Cheryl Pumphrey Philips (Scot) of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by his brother, Jay Pumphrey (Louise) of Jacksonville, FL. ; 8 grandchildren, a grandangel and 3 great-grandsons.
He served as Junior Warden on the Vestry for The Church of the Good Shepherd. Jacksonville, FL.
After retirement, Tom & Pat moved from Avondale to Ponte Vedra Beach, where he enjoyed golf with the Ponte Vedra Men’s Golf Association. He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, an active member of the Mayport Council, Navy League of the United States.
A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be on Friday, April 28th at 11 am at Christ Episcopal Church at Ponte Vedra, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. A reception will follow in the Parish Center.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or the charity of choice.
