Robert A Schauffler

Bob was born in Kansas City, MO and following graduation from Southwest High, he joined the Naval Reserve and through the Reserve won his appointment to the Academy. Bob was a member of the 14th Company and graduated as a member of the Class of 45.

Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the Supply Corps and immediately attended the Supply Corps school at Harvard University. After graduation Bob was assigned to the USS Healy as Supply Officer and after WWII served in the occupation of Japan. Later sea duty included the USS Henrico APA45 and the USS Rochester CA124. Overseas tours included duty in Majuro, Marshall Islands and the MAAG in Bonn, Germany. Bob was awarded the Legion of Merit for his performance in Germany. His Supply Corps procurement duty included Navy Purchasing Office Los Angeles; Electronic Supply Office, Great Lakes; Defense Contract Administration Services Region Chicago (where he earned his second Legion of Merit) and his final tour at NAVAIR.

Upon retirement in 1971 Bob joined Booz Allen where he oversaw the introduction of the F-14 into the Iranian Air Force on behalf of the US Navy.

Bob was a lifelong learner who was active in a wide variety of charitable activities and hobbies, including model ship building, sailing, croquet, lawn bowling, golf, scuba diving, music and drama, and community service at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, where he made his final home. He traveled extensively throughout his life exploring the US, as well as the Middle East, Russia, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Bob is survived by his wife Catherine, daughter Ann, sons Fred and Richard, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his oldest son Robert, Jr. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to either Fleet Landing Endowment Fund, One Fleet Landing Blvd, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233 or the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am on January 11, 2012, at Fleet Landing. Additional services will be held in Spring 2012 at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be interred with military honors next to his first wife, Jane Walker Schauffler.
