Margaret Mary (Menard Hogan) O’Rourke, age 87, of Ponte Vedra, FL passed away on October 12, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 17, 1935, in Schenectady, NY to Charles E. and Margaret M. Menard.
Margaret was a 1957 graduate of St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN where she received a degree in elementary education. She taught elementary school and played an integral role in the changing aspects of family-owned restaurants in Schenectady, NY. In 1978, her family moved to Manassas, VA, and Margaret began her career at the IBM Corporation until her retirement in 1996.
While she was dedicated to her professional interests and endeavors, Margaret’s favorite role in life was motherhood. As both a mother and grandmother, she volunteered at the schools her children and grandchildren attended. She enjoyed tutoring and accompanying the children on field trips. Margaret held so many fond memories of her family and loved ones and readily shared those memories with her children, grandchildren, and all her nieces and nephews whom she loved so much.
Margaret also had many other interests and hobbies; she loved knitting and teaching others this skill, and she gifted many of her special homemade items to friends and family over the years. She especially enjoyed Bridge, Maj-Jong, Scrabble, Sudoku, card games and puzzles. Margaret also enjoyed traveling and, in her later years, had the opportunity to experience many new places and cultures.
Margaret leaves behind 4 children, Kathleen E. Tagliaferri (Michael) of Mechanicsburg, PA, Charles C. Hogan (Stacey) of Jacksonville, FL, Michael M. Hogan of Manassas, VA, Maureen H. Rogers (Patrick) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and 4 stepchildren, Jean Fredette (Joe) of Ballston Spa, NY, Tracey Duesterdick (Scott) of Niskayuna, NY, Patti O’Rourke of Palm Coast, FL and Richard M. O’Rourke of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. She is also survived by her 18 grandchildren, Michael (Anne Marie), Alison, Mary Kate, Ryan, Emily, Grace, Claire, Kate, Brianna (Rocky), Sean, Matthew, Robin, Allison, Brynn (Dan), Jennifer (Brian), Megan (Greg), Jack, Kaeyla (Chris) and 7 great grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Charles E. Hogan, her husband of 14 years, Richard J. O’Rourke, her son, Kevin C. Hogan, her mother and father, her brother Edward (Ellen) Menard, and sisters Elaine (Robert) Blakey, Patricia (Tom) Clair, and Sister Lucille Menard, a Franciscan sister of the Atonement.
Everyone who knew Margaret loved and admired her for her character and spirit. She was young at heart, always smiling and positive, as well as strong, resilient, compassionate and generous. Margaret will be missed dearly, but we are blessed to know she has been welcomed by so many loved ones that have gone before her.
The funeral/memorial service is not immediately planned.
The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret’s wish was for donations to be made to:
