Joy Lemmon Casino, 99, passed away on May 12th, 2023 in Jacksonville, FL. She was born on October 16th, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised in the hills of Tennessee, but later moved to Jacksonville Beach where she graduated from Fletcher. Joy and her husband Danny moved into Anthem Lakes Assisted Living Facility in August in 2017. Her husband passed in 2019--but she continued to live there independently until she passed.
Joy, a World War II veteran, joined the Navy on her 20th Birthday in 1943. She was stationed in Washington, DC at the Bureau of Ships, where she was selected to march in President's Roosevelt’s funeral procession. After 2 years, she was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville at the separation center as storekeeper SKD 1st Class, where she met her husband Danny of 72 years. Her greatest memory during that period was separating her twin brother Loring from the Navy into civilian life.
Joy served alongside her husband Danny as a navy wife, their family grew, and raised 6 children. All 6 of her children graduated from Fletcher High School. Joy loved the navy and was a devoted Navy wife. She was president of the Navy Wives Club and loved volunteering in the Navy thrift store. She was a devout Christian and was a member of the First Christian Church of the Beaches for over 60 years. All six of her children were baptized and most of them were married in that church.
Joy was known as an exceptional seamstress around the Beaches of Jacksonville. She made and altered many uniforms for the students at St. Paul's School, and the Cheerleader's at Fletcher High school.
At the age of 90, she started making T-shirt dresses for little girls that were taken by missionaries to third world countries and orphanages all over the world, Each time she hit a goal she would ask God if he wanted her to stop or continue, but then she would find a bag of t-shirts or material at the doorstep and that was her answer to keep going. Last year she met her goal of 10,000, and only because her eyes were getting worse, she knew 10,000 was the number.
Joy was very active in Church Women United, in State and on a Local level. She was a huge Jaguar Fan from Day 1 and had the honor of being the veteran of the game on 2 occasions Joy's hands touched the world! Her love of life inspired those who knew her to walk in hope, faith and joy! She now walks with Jesus, and her gift to story-tell no doubt continues as she sits on a cloud sharing about her wonderful, full life. All the while she hears her savior whisper, “Well done my good and faithful servant”.
Joy is survived by her 3 daughters, Patti Ryan (Bubba), Theresa Richmond (Michael), Diane DePasquale (Michael), daughter-in-law Evelyn, 7 grandchildren, Celest Bourne, Jeffrey Casino, Stephen Casino, Amber Payne, Jeremy Greene, Jessica Davis, Derrick Beaver, Danielle Beaver, and 11 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel V. Casino of 72 years, 3 sons Michael, Chuck, and Danny, 4 grandchildren, Brian, Aaron, Andrea, and Chuckie and brothers John, Donald and Loring.
