Mrs. Martha Mae Shaw Hurt was born November 25, 1938, in Brownsville, TN to the late Herman Hector and Willie Lou Shaw. On Thursday, July 6, 2023, Martha Mae answered God’s call and her beautiful spirit transitioned from earth to heaven. Martha accepted Christ at an early age at Browns Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed attending Sunday school and church and served the church in many capacities such as the Mass Choir and the mother’s board. She also sung as a member of the singing group, The Gospel Echoes. Her love for the Lord was endurable, and she embraced the scripture, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7
Martha was the sixth child of six children. She attended Browns Creek School and later graduated from Carver High School in Haywood County. On February 13, 1960, Martha was united in holy matrimony to the late Levy Hurt, Jr and to this union six children were born
Martha Mae loved her family, the Shaw Farm, and she was a joy to all who graced her presence. She also loved reading, traveling, and listening to gospel music.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Hector, and Willie Lou Bond Shaw; husband, Levy Hurt, Jr; two sons, Ricky and Dennis Hurt; two brothers, Forest, and Willie Mack Shaw; and one sister, Marjorie Nicholson.
She leaves to cherish her memory: four sons, Gregory (Vontinece) Hurt of Houston, TX, Randy (Lisa) Hurt of Jackson, TN, Thomas (Amanda) Hurt, and Keith (Shawanda) Hurt both of Brownsville, TN; two sisters, Lillian Gray of Detroit, MI, and Natha Lee Wilks of Lake Cormorant, MS; three sister in laws, Willette Hurt of Colombus, OH, Annie Jean Shaw, and Ora Sue Shaw both of Brownsville, Tn; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends
A visitation with friends and loved ones for Martha will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 2812 N Highland Ave, Jackson, Tennessee 38305, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.
