Lloyd Weldon Privitt

Mr. Privitt was on born April 28, 1933 and is the son of the late Rosa and John Henry Privitt, brother to Raymond, J.D., Morris, Earl, Eva, Irene, & Kurhon Privitt. He is preceded in death by his late wife Patsy Jan Privitt, who passed away in 2003, and were married for 46 years. He leaves behind his only daughter Sherry Cole and husband Jeff Cole of Jackson, TN and granddaughters, Courtney Cole Hiscox and husband Stephen Hiscox, and Caitlin Cole Hamblin and husband Shawn Hamblin. He has 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend and companion of over 10 years, Brenda Magers of Decaturville, TN.

Lloyd was born and raised in Jackson, TN. He was the son of sharecroppers and the youngest of 8 children. He was drafted in 1950 for the Korean War and proudly served 2 years as a US Army Private Second Class Combat Engineer and Construction Equipment Operator. Lloyd felt one of his greatest accomplishments was in 1973, when he bought his first plane and obtained his pilots license. He also leaves a long legacy of community involvement in Jackson, TN.

Mr. Privitt founded General Brick Company in 1977 and managed the company for 30 years. He was a charter member of Jackson Good Morning Rotary Club. Mr. Privitt devoted his life to the restoration of Jackson’s heritage and culture by taking old, worn and tattered homes and restoring them to pristine condition. He took an active leadership role in the Preservation of East Main Street (POEMS) organization since its inception in 1982.

Mr. Privitt won multiple Civic Pride awards for these efforts, as well as his work in renovating the downtown area and the Depot on South Royal Street. He also served as the chairman of the Jackson-Madison County Historic Zoning Commission for 14 years. In May of 1996, Mayor Charles Farmer proclaimed May 13th as “Lloyd Privitt Day” for his acknowledgement of his unwavering efforts to preserve the history and architectural character in the Jackson community.

He later retired to the Tennessee River in Decaturville, TN with his wife Patsy and was one of the founding members of Willow Oaks River Community and restored an old barn into a beautiful home on the water. Lloyd managed the Tennessee River Flea Market for the last 15 years until his death.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 beginning at 10:00 am until 12:30 pm at the George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 2812 N. Highland Ave, Jackson, TN 38305 with Covid-19 restrictions including social distancing and masks recommended. There will be a graveside service at 1:00 pm to follow at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
