John served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he was a flight engineer for the C-121 Connie, an airborne early warning radar system. During his career in the United States Air Force, he also flew the B-29, B-50, and the C-124.
He retired from the Air Force in 1967 after 22 years of service and brought his family to Jackson, TN, bought their home in Jackson, and began a second career managing the State of Tennessee's heavy equipment maintenance shop.
John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Clara Juanita Potts, and their three children, Anita Hill of Lexington, KY; John Potts of Pinetop, Lakeside, AZ; and Cindy Deloach of Nashville, TN. John and Clara have five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and are members of the First Baptist Church of Jackson, TN.
The family will greet friends at visitation to begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel. Dr. Justin Wainscott will lead services at 1 p.m. followed by a graveside service at Highland Memorial Gardens. John John's son John writes, "My father was the most generous person I knew. He was always first to ask strangers if they needed help, and he was always there to lend a hand no matter what the need."
The Potts family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN, for their attentiveness and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John Potts' name to the First Baptist Church of Jackson, the Tennessee State Veterans Home or to the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society in memory of "Tucker" Potts, who was John's best friend.
