I just  learned today 3/5/2020 that John had  passed. John was a great friend when we were kids at Highland Park  Elementary school.  We often played baseball or football in the vacant lot owned by district attorney Whit Lafon, in the neighborhood where John lived. My cousins John, James, and Drew  Eason lived in that neighborhood as did Tim Roberts and Larry Chambers, All good  friends.  John and I  were in Chemistry, Physics, and math classes together  at JCM with  Dr Dean Currie,  Dr Tom Woods, Dr Bill Clark,  Paul Rains, Kay Langdon, Luanne  Harris, and many others  that were inspired  by Mr John Pechonik and Mr Don Newman.
At UT Medical School in Memphis, my wife Jenny and I lived next door  to John  and Joy in a duplex.
Later, John took excellent care of  my Dad when  he needed urologic surgery.
We will  miss you John, and our  prayers are with Joy  and your  family.

i was a patient of his for twenty-five years. I loved him like a brother. He was a find christian man. He was the first Dr. to have a prayer after our visit.  i was his 165th cryo  patient Thanks to him I have survived to be 84 years old and now have bone cancer. 


Dr. Merriweather regularly treated my kidney stones for years, and hugged me with joy when I told him that I was going to have a baby at 43, and we'd have to halt the lithotripsy treatments for a bit. He then discovered my staghorn kidney stone and had to remove my right kidney a few years later...he was the best doctor I can ever imagine to have treated me-from pre to post surgery - he was very hands on and so caring! 
On my last check up visit with him a year or two ago, he checked me out, told me he'd have my office help me find another doctor for future checkups, and hugged me. He was the kindest, funniest, and most caring doctor I've ever had. I thank God I had the pleasure of being his patient for those years. 

I reviewed the photos of Johns life. He had a great life and family. Family was a major part of his life. May his life live on thru his children an grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. We look forward to seeing him in heaven. Love, Dan and Susie Williams.

To John's family-  I cannot express in words my feelings when I heard this news.  I know John is in a place where there's no more pain and sickness, only comfort and peace. 
  
I have such great memories of growing up with John and Melissa on Martin St.  What friends we were!  It brings a smile to my face when I think of all the good times we all had on that little dead-end street.

I lost contact with John after I left Tennessee, but know I'll see my Christian brother in Heaven.  May God be with you all in these difficult days.

Dr. Meriwether was the most caring man I’ve ever met. I had the privilege of being his nurse for almost 3 years and in that short period of time he taught me so many lessons about life and I gained so much respect for the man he was. He knew all of his patients by first name and made their care his first priority even after he himself was diagnosed with cancer. Whether he was telling a funny joke or belting out a beautiful song in his deep singing voice he was giving his patients hope. They could be having the worst day ever and then leave his practice with all smiles. There were days he may have been tired or even sore himself after his diagnosis but you would’ve never known because he never slowed down one bit. I am so thankful I was given the opportunity to not only work for him but get to know him as a person. I pray Joy and the kids have peace during this difficult time and want to say thank you for sharing him with us and allowing us the opportunity to get to know him. May God Bless you. 

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Merriweather at Regional Hospital! He was such a pleasure to work with always, he was a gentle caring soul, he Loved his Family! JOHN WAS OUR UROLOGIST AND FRIEND AND IS GOING TO MISSED GREATLY. I'VE KNOW JOHN MY WHOLE LIFE AS MY BROTHER JACK AND HIM GRADUATED FROM JCM IN 1977. WE USE TO HUNT ON JOHN'S LAND AND HE WAS ALWAYS SO FUN TO BE AROUND. PRAYERS FOR WIFE, JOY AND HIS CHILDREN. MUCH LOVE FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS. HE WAS A GENUINE AND CARING CHRISTIAN SOUL.

John was a gentleman. He called on me a few times in my youth.
I was just entering high school. I guess he was a year or two older.  He made me a bowl which I kept for years. John knew how to treat people well, with kindness.  Looking back, he was like a role model on how to treat a person. I pray for his wife and family during this time. 

I called on Dr Meriwether  for many years as a pharmaceutical rep. He was always so kind & gracious to make time for me. I observed only compliments from his patients.
He was a fine doctor!

One of the best doctors I have ever had. Kind with a great wonderful interest in his patients. He will be missed. A life well lived. 

Dr. Merriweather treated my husbands kidney stones. He did several surgeries on him to bust them up.  He always had a great sense of humor and kindness when he dealt with you or family members. I hated to hear of his struggle with cancer. He will be missed. But he us home now and comfortable.  

Dr. Merriwether treated my dad many years ago. He was very professional but very caring and personable. He was there to heal but it was evident that he cared  not only for my dad but for dad’s loved ones as well.

A wonderful Christian doctor and cherished friend. Before my husband's kidney surgery, he took us by the hand and prayed for both of us. He also prayed that God would guide his hands during the surgery.  This meant so much to me.

Although I had not seen John since we shared classes in high school, I have thought about him often over the years. I recall that he was a serious minded, laser- focused student who maintained a great sense of humor. I still remember his one of a kind smile and laugh. John was kind to all and brought a maturity beyond his years. He knew his calling early on. In school,  I was amazed to learn that John, as a 10th or 11th grader, was going in rounds at the hospital! My decision to become a physician came many years later. And, over the many years that have followed, who would imagine that a high school kid named John Meriwether would continue to be a role model for a physician who has been in practice for 30 years.

Dr. Meriwether was a kind and compassionate Doctor.  He was a great Doctor.  I have missed him very much since he had to retire.

I love this picture of him because it is exactly how I want to remember him with his curly hair. Dr. Merriweather was one of the kindest doctors I have ever worked for at the clinic. He was caring and compassionate towards his patients. He always treated his fellow coworkers with kindness and respect.  One of my favorite memories of him, he came into the lab and yelled “waassuup?!” I said , “Riding around get in!” We had a good laugh. My heart breaks for his family! My prayers to you all🙏 RIP Doc No more cancer!

My daddy absolutely loved him. Seeing him or not, he would always track us down when we were in the hospital. He was a great, kind, genuine man. Prayers for his family.  What an awesome, kind human being.

I was honored to work with Dr. Meriwether as a RN for (5) yrs on old 6 North @ JMCGH...He was so professional to the nurses & compassionate with our patients.  Then he became my late husband’s urologist  & the last year before he retired became my Doc...He treated me at the Clinic the last week he worked before retirement.  He was one of the finest Christians & a joy to be around...  He will be remembered for his goodness!  May God bless & comfort his precious wife & family @ this difficult time.   You finished your race Doc & now with your Lord!   

Dr. John was a wonderful doctor, one of the most compassionate doctors my husband and I have ever had. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, he helped us find the care he needed. Thank you for sharing him with us, he was a skilled urologist.  I have your family in my prayers.  Sandy Hardin 

So very sorry to the family for your precious loss. My Dad & Mama were Dr Merwether’s patients. He was wonderful to them. Praying the Lord’s perfect peace & comfort for you now & the days ahead. 

I worked with Dr. Meriwether in surgery for many years and always loved seeing his sweet  smiling face. He was always kind, funny and a gentleman.  He was also my husband's doctor and was the very best!! Then he became my patient at the Kirkland cancer center and I was heart broken, but he was still the sweet loving gentleman I had always known. He always gave me a smile and a hug and sometimes an"I love you". He made me feel special and important, when I needed to make him feel good. I can't imagine the feelings of loss his sweet family must feel. I know when my time comes to go to heaven, ,that he will be there to greet me with his sweet smile. Rest in peace thou good and faithful servant!!!

Dr. Meriwether had such a kind and caring nature about him. He put his patients at ease. He was a wonderful doctor and he truly cared about his patients. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him. 

Dr. Meriwether was one of a kind.  He was a wonderful teacher and colleague to me and a caring physician to my family.    He made us all laugh along the way too. He will be greatly missed.  Prayers for your family.  Thank you for sharing him with us.

We were very fortunate  to  know  Dr. Merriwether. I worked with him at the hospital  for several  years and he was my husband's doctor as well. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.  May God give you comfort and peace in your grief.

Hi, I work for the EVS department at the hospital.  Dr. Meriwether always treated me with the same dignity and respect that he would give any of colleges. I would pass him I the hallway and we speak and joke. I will truly miss seeing him. My condolences.
