Born on March 10, 1929, in Greenfield, Tennessee, JoAnn was raised in Greenfield and attended school there before her family relocated to Bolivar, Tennessee. On December 21, 1947, JoAnn married B.H. Smith Jr, with whom she shared 52 loving years of marriage until his passing in 2000. They moved to Malesus, where they raised their family and built a warm, nurturing home. JoAnn was dedicated to her children’s church and school activities, always actively supporting them in every way she could. For over five decades, she was a faithful and involved member of Malesus Baptist Church, where she found community, comfort, and purpose.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Kathryn Hillis Crockett, her husband, B.H. Smith Jr, nephew, Randy Smith, niece, Sherry Lowery; and niece, Ronda Stafford who joined her in Heaven on November 11.
She is survived by her children, Michael Crockett Smith (Donna Thackwray) of Morganton, NC and Skandia, MI and Sylvia Smith Young (Stan) of Eads, TN; her sister, Jeanette Crockett McAlister, wife of the late James McAlister; and nieces, Kathy White and Betty Smith, who cherished her warmth, strength, and kindness.
A service to celebrate JoAnn Smith’s life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, with Reverend Peter G. Law officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Malesus. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m., one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers are: Dennis Harris, James Moody, Virgil Rushing, Scott Young, Tyler White, and Stan Young II.
JoAnn’s memory will forever remain a source of love and inspiration for those who knew her.
