Born on July 16, 1924 in Memphis, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late John Charles McCallen, Jr. and Laura Ethel Wragg McCallen. Visitation with the family will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020 from 11:00 to 1:00 with the service immediately following at George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 2812 N. Highland Avenue, Jackson, TN 38305. Graveside services at Ridgecrest Cemetery to follow
She was a 1946 graduate of Union University, where she was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. She was also a member the Mutual Improvement Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the War of 1812, and the PEO Sisterhood. She had a lifelong fascination with genealogy, and had traced her family lineage all the way back to 1610 in Ireland.
She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson for more than 40 years, and was well-loved by the congregation. She sang in the church choir for forty-two years, finally retiring from the choir on Easter Sunday of 2019. She also served in many other church capacities.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Dr. James Alfred Phillips of Jackson, her sister Jacqueline McCallen Leahy of St. Louis, Missouri, and her brother Charles Gordon McCallen of Nashville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her three sons: James McLeskey Phillips (Deborah) of Wilmington North Carolina; John Charles (Jack) Phillips (Karen) of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia; and George Robert Phillips (Susan) of Nashville, Tennessee. Five grandchildren: Jennifer Phillips Locklear (Alex) of Cary, North Carolina; Sarah Phillips Parker (Rob) of Wilmington North Carolina; James Alfred Phillips II (Rebecca) of Greenville, South Carolina; Katherine Elizabeth (Katie) Phillips of Nashville, Tennessee and James (Trey) McLeskey Phillips III of Atlanta, Georgia. Five great-grandchildren: Jaxon Joe Holland, Charlotte Elizabeth Parker, Robert James McLeskey Phillips, Eliana Adele Locklear, and John Isaac McCallen Phillips.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers any memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
