Sam K. Evans entered Heaven on August 24, 2016, following a short illness. Sam was born on January 2, 1925 in Canton, Mississippi. He was one of seven children born to Calvin Kelly Evans and Ruth Phillips Evans. He is survived by two sisters, Kate Evans Renfrow and Frances Evans Lemser.
His precious wife, Carmen, preceded him in death by just eleven months. He was “Daddy Sam” to Carmen’s granddaughters, Sheriee Sherer Townsend (Mike,) Janet Renee Sherer, Carrie Sherer-Victor (Phil Victor,) and Jerri Sherer (Roy Adkins.) He was also “Daddy Sam” to great grandchildren Daniel Townsend (Jennifer,) Matt Townsend (Cortney,) Ashley Russ Warren (Larry,) and Georgia Adkins, and great-great grandchildren Payton Townsend, Cole Townsend, Josie Townsend, Ethan Lechner, Amilah Warren and L.J. Warren. Sam was preceded in death by a beloved great grandson, Joey Rhodes.
Sam also leaves his son-in-law, David Sherer, and his wife, Estelle. His wife’s caregivers, Anna Carter, Bettie Curtis, and Kaylon Winstead, had stayed close and in touch with Sam after Carmen’s death, which meant a great deal to him and to the family.
Sam served his country honorably during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a gunner on Merchant Marine ships and crossed the North Atlantic fourteen times, escorting troop ships and military tankers. He could tell you where he was on any given day in any given year and had a wonderful recall of peoples’ names.
For many years, Sam was a successful traveling salesman, providing equipment and supplies to barber shops and beauty shops. When he met his sweet Carmen, they married and he gave up traveling, except for the many, many trips they made together, far and wide. He was then a cattleman and hay farmer, as well as operating a restaurant/convenience store in Raymond, Mississippi.
Sam and Carmen were very active members of Salem Baptist Church in Learned, Mississippi, until they sold their farm and moved to Clinton. They moved there to be of help to Carmen’s daughter, Janet Tullos Sherer, who had developed serious health problems. They joined Pocahontas Baptist Church and formed many wonderful friendships there, as they had at Salem.
After Carmen went on to Heaven, one of Sam’s favorite activities was to have coffee with his “buds” at Chik-Fil-A six mornings a week. There, they settled all the important issues of the world. The staff at Chik-Fil-A were especially kind to Sam, throwing him a very elaborate Ninetieth birthday party, which blessed him immensely.
Sam loved his wife and his family. He loved his country. He loved his Savior. Everyone who knew Sam well knows Where he is and can rejoice that he is with his beloved Carmen once more.
Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 10:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
