Martha Chapman Munsey was born December 10, 1935, in Natchez, Mississippi. She was lovingly adopted by Mr. and Mrs. I.B. Chapman of Jackson, Mississippi. She would be their only child.
She had a wonderful upbringing with her new family. She grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and Orlando, Florida while her dad was in the service. She graduated from Central High School in 1954. She made some life long friends there and when she worked at the telephone company.
She married Richard B. Munsey, Sr. on June 2, 1961, welcomed a son, Richard B. Munsey, Jr. born the following year and daughter, Dianne Munsey Nettles in 1964. She lived with her family in Birmingham, Alabama, Richmond, Virginia, Jackson, Mississippi and Brentwood, Tennessee.
She was a legal secretary in Birmingham, Alabama. She headed the Hinds County Association for Retarded Citizens (HARC). She arranged camps and dances for the handicapped. She was very dedicated and active ni this area. Helping the handicapped was very near and dear to her heart.
Martha proudly volunteered at St. Dominics Hospital from 1992-2008.
Martha loved to travel to Maine where her husband of 63 years was born and raised. She loved lobster rolls and seeing the foliage ni the fall. She took several cruises ot the Carribean and to Alaska. She loved her family and her dogs Trixie, Mitzi, Brittany and Cookie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, I.B. and Vivian Chapman. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Richard B. Munsey, Sr., son, Richard B. Munsey, Jr., daughter, Dianne Nettles (Dexter) of Carthage, Mississippi.
Martha's family would like to thank the staff of Ridgeland Place for the care given to her and also Tamra from AccentCare/Hospice.
A visitation for Martha will be held Friday, September 27, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209, followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM. Martha will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park.
