Lester “Jiggs” Day, 87, passed away on April 7, 2019. He was born on November 30, 1931 in Yalobusha County, MS. He was the son of James Lester Day and Bertie Lucille Haire Day. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife, Betty Lou Quinn Day; siblings, Bobby Gene Day, Danny Lee Day and Billy Dean Day. He is survived by his two children, Lester Gene Day of Blue Ridge, GA and Debra Lyn Norwood and her husband, Bobby Dean Norwood of Edwards, MS; siblings, Chester Day, Marie Rawson and Martha Emerson; four grandchildren, Leslie Lou Norwood Goode, Eric Dean Norwood, Lester Chadwick Day and Betty LeAnne Shannon; nine great grandchildren and his faithful dog and companion, Creo.
Lester served in the Navy on the USS Whetstone during the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, he worked for Robinson Brothers until joining the Jackson Fire Department. He served as a Fireman from 1958 to 1972. In 1973, he opened Lester’s Automotive Service until his retirement.
Lester served as Commander of the American Legion Henry H. Graves Post One for many years. He was also a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge and a Mason. He will be remembered for his love of life, a good card or domino game, ability to repair any vehicle put in front of him and working with his hands.
Lester’s visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm and Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 10 am to 11 am at Lakewood South Funeral Home. A funeral service for Lester will follow at 11 am at Lakewood South Funeral Home with interment to follow at Lakewood South Memorial Park.
