Leona Bass Hawkins, age 83 – of Florence, MS, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 21, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She will be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.
Mrs. Hawkins was born in Crosby, MS on October 1, 1934, and graduated from Crosby High School in 1952. She was a former resident of Clinton, MS for 32 years, and was a member of Pocahontas
Baptist Church. She was known as being a loving and compassionate person who always had a smile on her face and who never met a stranger. She was an avid hummingbird watcher; a member of the Order of Eastern Star Pearl #120 formerly Radiant Chapter. She loved her brothers and sisters and was famously known for her delicious butter cakes.
Mrs. Hawkins is preceded in death by her parents, Leon K. Bass and Katie Cobb Pigg; twin brother, Leon Bass; and sisters: Marie Fitzhugh and Barbara Webb.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Revis L. Hawkins, Jr.; sons: Jeff Hawkins (Renee) of Florence, Lane Hawkins (Tammy) of Brandon; daughters Lisa Ellis (Dennis) of Byram, Jill Ross (Marc) of Florence; sister, Bonnie Webb of McComb; brother, David Bass of Raymond; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to the staff at PlainView Assisted Living and to St. Joseph Hospice Ministries, for their compassionate and loving care as well as her precious caregiver, Alicia Floyd, who compassionately cared and attended to her while at home.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2017 at Lakewood Funeral Home on Clinton Boulevard and from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2017. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pocahontas Baptist Church.
