Jesse Audrey Mayo (1928-2024) affectionately known as Tommie, was dedicated to her family & hardworking. Born in central Mississippi, near Philadelphia, she grew up in a large family where she learned the values of love, work and helping others.
Tommie was the valedictorian of her high school class, a faithful member of her church and made Christ the Lord of her life at an early age. Tommie has been a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. She met Jim Mayo on a blind date and after a courtship and before he was sent to Japan by the Air Force, they married in 1948 and celebrated their 76th anniversary earlier this year!
She held many meaningful positions during her career but never left her “country roots”. Tommie was a fabulous cook, canned vegetables and preserves from their garden. Her true gift was in stitchery- quilting, crocheting, knitting & needle pointing.
Tommie was the matriarch of her family in every sense. She is survived by her husband, Jim; two children and spouses, Steven D. Mayo & Sandra, Martha Mayo Grayson & Jerry Grayson; four grandchildren, Tara Grissom, Steve P. Mayo, Ashley Grayson Brown and Justin Grayson; ten greatgrandchildren- Jordan Grissom, Ty Grissom, Sydney Grissom, Audrey Mayo, Sam Mayo, Andy Brown, Jackson Brown, Lainey Brown, Eli Grayson and Adam Grayson.
Tommie will be sorely missed by all who knew her and her legacy will live on through family that she taught the spirit of love, giving and kindheartedness.
A visitation for Jessie "Tommie" will be held Friday, November 15, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church-Jackson, Jackson, MS, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, Mississippi 39209.
