Jean Johnson Lentz passed away on Monday, January 15th at her home in Brandon, Mississippi at the age of 86. She was born in Tupelo in 1937 to Muller and Cleo Ray Johnson and grew up on the family's dairy farm. After high school, She attended Mississippi College, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in Library Science. She was a public elementary school librarian for over 30 years, the majority of which were spent at Sykes Elementary School in south Jackson.
Jean was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, youth ministry sponsor, and Training Union teacher and was an active member of the WMU. She spent her life serving others and was a devoted mother and grandmother who was involved in every way in the activities of her children and grandchildren. Countless children considered her a second mother or "Memama" as she opened her home to them and as she drove them to church activities, parks, and practices. She truly lived out Mark 12:30-31: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" and "love your neighbor as yourself."
She enjoyed sharing her love of reading with her countless friends, spending hours working in her yard and gardening, and devotedly caring for her dog, Paddington.
She is survived by her two daughters, Deleslynn (Chuck) Barlow and Lauren Lentz, her two grandchildren, Tristan (Agnieszka) Barlow and Jordan (Zackary) Martella, her great-granddaughter, Julia Martella, her step-great granddaughters, Saskia and Alma Stone of London, and her brother, Lee (Ruth) Johnson of Tupelo, MS.
Services will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson on January 20th at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts may be directed to Calvary Baptist Church, 1300 W. Capitol Street, Jackson, Mississippi 39203.
