William was a graduate of Lamar High School in Houston, TX, and earned his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Houston. William was a retired Physicist from Battelle, a global research and development organization, working under the US Department of Energy. He has also previously worked as a physicist for Lockheed and NASA, and as a part-time professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church.
William enjoyed being a pilot, and making model airplanes. He also enjoyed studying Biblical Hebrew, and could speak fluently.
A graveside service will be held at Hendersonville Memory Gardens, Hendersonville, TN, on April 16, 2024, at 1:00 PM.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina, on April 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM. There will be visitation at the church one hour before the service.
Surviving William are, his loving wife, Darlene Sams; Daughters, Kathleen Sams of Richmond VA, Rebecca Robinson (Wyche) of Richmond, VA; Stepson; Joseph Cline (Joye) of White House, TN; Stepdaughter, Alys Blair (Jamie) of Leesville, SC; grandchildren, Christopher Flippen, Catherine Flippen, Lucy Robinson, and Mary Alice Robinson; five step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
