Merle was born to Allie and Elberta Norris in Roseboro, NC. He graduated from Chadbourn High School in 1959 and the University of North Carolina – Wilmington in 1962. He then found his calling in sales where his natural ease with people led to a successful career that primarily focused on paper and tape. He enjoyed working at Anchor Continental Tape for more than 20 years. Many of his customers and coworkers proudly became longtime friends. He retired to Mountain Aire Golf Course in West Jefferson, NC, in 1994. An avid golfer and UNC fan, Merle was happiest when on the golf course and cheering on the Tarheels with family and friends.
Everyone who knew Merle felt his big heart and experienced his gift for making people laugh. His antics are legendary and those who knew him were fortunate to experience great laughter and immense love when with him. He never knew a stranger and always made everyone feel welcome. His sense of humor was second to none and he would do anything for a laugh.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Affectionately known as “Pip” to his grandchildren and their friends, he could often be found proudly cheering them on at their many sports and life events. They learned early on that his hugs and unconditional love could cure anything. All who knew him were touched by his humor and kindness.
A longtime member of Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church, Merle proudly served as an elder, sang in the choir, and participated in many activities. His strong faith and love for God was shared with others in all that he did – especially through his gentle kindness.
Merle is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jane Norris; children Tammy Baxley (Bobby) of Chapin, Rodney Norris (Nina) of Rogersville, TN, and Brad Norris (Pam) of Chapin; and grandchildren Corey Norris, Cole Baxley (Hannah), Mary Courtney Warren (Dion), Joshua Baxley, Riley Norris, Anna Baxley, Jack Norris, Catherine Norris, and Carlee Norris.
A celebration of life and memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, at Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church in West Jefferson, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 782, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
