COLUMBIA - A Funeral service for the Rev. John Havener Dowling, 80, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Burial will be private in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Dowling died Sunday, February 15, 2015. Born February 24, 1934, in Johnstown, Pa., he was a son of the late Charles Buist Dowling, Jr. and Ruth Havener Dowling. A graduate of University High School, he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. He also completed doctoral work in Psychology. At the Southeastern Baptist Seminary, he earned a Master’s degree in Divinity. The Rev. Dowling served at various churches in North and South Carolina. He also owned several successful businesses in the Columbia area. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Nancy Dennis Dowling; daughters, Cindy Skinner (Steve) of Greenwood, Dianne Slotnick (Kenneth) of Atlanta, Ga., Judi Platt (Michael) of Chapin; grandchildren, Josh Skinner (Mary Kate) of Charleston, Ben Skinner of Charleston, Casey Skinner (Jose) of Greenville, Samuel and Nicholas Platt both of Chapin; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Havener Dowling (Barbara) of N.C. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Dowling, III and a sister, Agnes Keller.
