Jim proudly served in the United States Navy for 30 years retiring in 1973, achieving the rank of Communications Technician Master Chief. Jim met Jewel when they were both serving in the Navy. They were married on August 6, 1948 at the Naval Chapel in Washington, DC. Jim and Jewel both had a deep sense of pride for their service in the Navy, and traveled the world as a family with Jo Ann and Jody while Jim was stationed at various Navy bases in and outside the U.S.
After retirement, Jim enjoyed woodworking and being a Mr. Fix It for his children and grandchildren. In 1994, Jim and Jewel settled in South Carolina, where he continued to live until his passing. Jim found companionship with Mildred and they were wed in 2015.
