Cindy Louise Gay Dangerfield of Hanahan, SC went home to our Lord on Monday, November 18, 2024. She was welcomed to eternity by her husband (Bert), son (Randy), and so many family members and loved ones.
She was born in Camden, SC to James Hinton and Effie Mae Gay (predeceased). She was also predeceased by her sisters Vivian Gay Bise and Loubie Gay O’Neill, and three brothers – William Gay, Charles William Gay and J.H. Gay, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter Cynthia Dangerfield (Daphne) and Lisa Barrineau (Barry); grandchildren Randy Barrineau (Yisi) and Danielle Miller (Kevin); three great grandchildren Meredith Miller, Hannah Miller and Curtis Barrineau. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
She was very active in community service, school and church volunteerism, nursing home programs, and organizations that supported worthy causes. She served in many leadership capacities over her lifetime. She was very proud of working with the March of Dimes for many years, both with her husband preparing for opening night of the the CRC March of Dimes Bowling Tournament while also chairing the Mothers March locally.
She was a Hanahan Rec cheerleading coach for 14 years and the league commissioner for 3 years. She loved the program and the girls – even if she had to pretend she was authoritative while she would rather have been goofing around with the cheerleaders. She sewed endless numbers of cheerleading uniforms during those years and beyond.
She was a Past President (4 times) and Life Member of the Charleston Rifle Club Ladies Auxiliary, and filled many other offices, board positions, and many committee chairs in the Club. She was their photographer for a few years and cut off the subjects’ heads in most pictures.
She loved gardening – you’d know if you ever saw her yard that she loved it too much, and she loved flower arranging. She was a past President of the Berkely Hills Garden Club, sat on the Council of Garden Clubs and also served in many other capacities. She was awarded a Life Membership in the South Carolina Garden Council. She was also the liaison between Hanahan City Council and the Garden Club on many endeavors, and between Hanahan schools and the Garden Club on special learning projects. She was appointed to the inaugural Hanahan Beautification Committee for the City of Hanahan.
If you ever rode down Hillside Dr. during the Christmas holidays, you were treated to her award winning Christmas Doors. She thought of them as her Christmas Card to the neighborhood, and planned for them sometimes a year in advance.
She was President for Life of the Happy Hearts Club, a ladies circle that she joined at 18 and lasted 50+ years after that. This was a special group of women that were a family and supported each other and their families for life and all its ups and downs.
She was an avid bowler and team captain – just not a great bowler.
She was 7th grade valedictorian and had perfect attendance at Rosemont School in Charleston. That school closed at some point and was turned into a food stamp distribution center – she loved to tell people that she was Valedictorian of the Food Stamp Center.
She attended Chicora High School for 8th and 9th grade and later earned her GED. She worked at the Naval Supply Center, earning several performance awards. One of her favorite jobs, though, was being a Mystery Shopper for Piggly Wiggly for over 6 years.
She was the consummate cook and host. Everyone was welcome, whether a planned guest or not. She was especially “famous” for her fried chicken and homemade biscuits. Every holiday there was a huge meal at her house with plenty of extended family and friends. She loved doing it and insisted on doing it mostly on her own.
Nothing she did in life was surpassed by her love for her family. She had a strong 63+ year marriage. She poured her life into raising strong, faithful, and responsible children and adults. She also worked hard to pass these values on to her grands, who were her world.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday, November 25, 2024 at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at Highland Park Baptist Church.
