Mrs. Carolyn Griffis Shuler, 90, died peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Edgefield, SC and was the daughter of the late Thomas Marion, Sr. and Belle Minick Griffis. Growing up she was a member of Berea Baptist Church. She attended Coker College and received a degree from Draughon’s Business College. She married her devoted husband of 66 years, Edwin, on September 19, 1951. She had three sons: Thomas Edwin “Ted” (Saralee), John Malcolm Minick (Karla), and Griffis Clark “Griff” (Julie) and five Grandchildren: Taylor, Emma, Abby, Perrin, and Karae.
Carolyn received Jesus Christ as her Savior in the early 50’s. She had a deep love for the Bible, prayer, and evangelism. She had years of service with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Youth Temperance Council. Mrs. Shuler held numerous camping events and Bible studies at their home for church groups, youth groups, international students from USC, and many others. Over the years she shared the gospel of Jesus Christ to hundreds of children, teenagers, and adults. Carolyn had a ministry in cooperation with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in providing Christian services in nursing homes. She had a passion for sharing the Gospel to inmates in our prisons. Mrs. Shuler would work at the Child Evangelism Fellowship booth at the South Carolina State Fair. She passed out thousands of Christian tracts at the Okra Strut Parade in Irmo. Carolyn was instrumental in starting several new churches in the Columbia and Lexington areas. It was common for her to walk up to a complete stranger, get their name and phone number, and become a long-time friend with the individual.
More recently, as a member of Dutch Fork Baptist Church, she was known as a Prayer Warrior. She would pray for any and everyone, if they were expecting it or not.
She is predeceased by 4 brothers: Marion, Reed, Sam, and Robert Griffis; and one sister: Annabelle Nicholson. Mrs. Shuler has one surviving sister: Mrs. Emma Covar of Edgefield.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Susan and Dan Goering and Tammy and Tom Clark for their faithful support and friendship in providing their loving care to Mrs. Shuler over the last several years.
The funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Dutch Fork Baptist Church in Ballentine. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Berea Baptist Church Cemetery, in Edgefield.
