EN EL CUIDADO DE
Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery
William (Bill) H. Harrison of Fishers, Indiana, called it a day on November 9, 2024, leaving this world a little quieter and a lot funnier. He passed peacefully at home at the age of 89, surrounded by his wife, Carol, and his children, Darren Harrison (Susanne Rippey) and Shane Sloma (Josh Sloma), who were hoping to squeeze out one last joke.
Bill’s life was marked by his love of family and country, his sense of humor and quick wit, and acts of kindness. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as an aircraft gunner, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military service, he joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, taking on numerous roles—including hostage negotiator, water rescue team member, firearms instructor (as a Sharp Shooter, no less), SWAT team member, and Homicide Lieutenant. Somewhere along the line, he managed to charm his way into being named Deputy of the Year in 1988.
Bill’s friends swore he missed his calling as a stand-up comic. He had a quick wit that remained with him until his passing. His comedic moments made his friends laugh--with a few making his wife cringe. He was an avid golfer, loved animals, music, theatre, cigars, and bourbon. His life was full of love, laughter, and more than a few memorable one-liners.
When he wasn’t making people laugh, Bill wrote books and plays, song lyrics, and poetry. At 80, he published his first book, ReRuns, a collection of police stories that, yes, really happened. A sequel is set for release soon, and let’s hope he’s cracking up a few angels about it. He also wrote a children’s book series, Ollie and the Amazing Dream Machine, leaving behind even more laughs and memories for younger generations.
Graveside services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery on November 23, 2024, in the section reserved for law enforcement—because of course, he’s still got connections. The family will host an open house from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Harrison home that day and would be honored if you would drop by, swap stories, and participate in a toast to a man we all loved. For directions, call 317-721-8193.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the Humane Society. And if you really want to honor his memory, find a small way to brighten someone’s day
