After a courageous 4-year battle with cancer, Suzy Gillespie Steger, age 83 of Carmel, IN, passed away peacefully at home on December 18, 2024. She is survived by her children Cynthia Anne Steger-Wilson and her husband Andrew Steger-Wilson; Emily McKee Kirk and her husband Kevin Kirk; and her grandchildren Lydia Steger-Wilson, Audrey Steger-Wilson, Aidan Kirk, and Katie Kirk.
Suzy was born in Indianapolis to the late Jacob Earl and Jacqueline McKee Gillespie on April 19, 1941. She graduated from Shortridge high School in 1959 and Colorado College in 1963. She married the late Evan E. Steger, III on July 18, 1964.
Suzy was an active member of numerous organizations in the Indianapolis community, chairing several committees and holding many offices over the years. She was a Guild Member at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis for more than 20 years, a founding member of the Assistance League of Indianapolis, and was active in the Trailing Arbutus Garden Club and the Progressive Club.
In addition to her dedication to her family and service to her community, Suzy loved animals, especially horses and dogs, tennis, bridge, and gardening. She was a competitive rider at a young age, winning several trophies at the Indiana State Fair starting when she was just 7 years old. She was a member of several decades-long tennis and bridge groups with cherished friends and neighbors.
Suzy and her family enjoyed vacationing every summer with family and friends on Beaver Island, Michigan, where they have a summer home.
Family and friends will gather to remember Suzy at the Northminster Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 27. The Calling will be from noon to 1:00 p.m. and the Celebration of Life will begin at 1:00 p.m. There will be a private interment at Crown Hill Cemetery.
