Robert A. Anker, 81, of Carmel, Indiana departed this life at his home on Friday, August 4, 2023. Bob was born December 24, 1941 in Austin, Minnesota to the late Alvin and Ruth (McGuire) Anker. He was a proud graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he earned his degree in mathematics.
Bob’s career as an actuary and insurance executive began at Employers Insurance of Wausau in 1964 and brought him to American States Insurance in Indianapolis in 1974. He retired from American States as chairman and CEO at the end of 1997. In his retirement, Bob enjoyed trips to his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, solving Sudoku and Crossword puzzles and celebrating the arts. He was happiest having fun and making memories with his beloved family and friends.
Bob loved the arts and served on the boards of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Indianapolis Art Center, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. His civic involvement included the Washington Township School Board and the Indianapolis and Fort Wayne Chambers of Commerce. He was proud to have served as a trustee of his alma mater, Lawrence University.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Anker. Bob was deeply loved and will be forever cherished by his wife of 55 years, Pat Anker; children, Sean (Loni Dishong) Anker, Kevin (Julli) Anker, Jennifer Anker and Jackie (Matt) Allman; grandchildren, Brandon Fourman, Taylor (Michael Park) Walker-Anker, Patrick Anker, and Eric & Tory Allman; great-grandchildren, Xander & Alessa Anker; aunt, Shirley Madison; in-laws, Marlene Anker, Barb Kennedy and Steve Kennedy; former daughter-in-law Elizabeth Anker as well as many friends and associates.
Visitation for Bob will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 12th at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel and conclude at time of Bob’s celebration of life at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Bob’s name to Lawrence University, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, or a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.
