Graduate of Cathedral High School in 1948, University of Notre Dame in 1954, and American Floral Art & Design School in 1954. He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.
Together with his brother Bob founded McNamara Bros. Florist in 1954. He completed his career with Great West Life Insurance Company after 45 years.
The McNamara Family donated the land for which Our Lady of Mt. Carmel stands today and he was a charter member in 1955. He and his wife Peggy contributed to that community in many ways. He had many interests including, genealogy, following the history of standard bred horses and the family business of Two Gaits Farm, and fishing with family members in Canada. Of his many accomplishments, two of his proudest moments were being named the 2012 Indianapolis Irishman of the Year and the 2007 recipient of the University of Notre Dame Person of the Year Award.
Survived by spouse of 64 years, Margaret (Peggy) McNamara, children Margaret (Meg) M. McNamara (Georgescu), Julie A. (Rannan) Smith, Maura E. (Russell) Fortune, Brendan M. (Stephanie) McNamara, daughter-in-law Jennifer M. McNamara, 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents, sister Eleanor L. Blackwell, brothers: James E, John P., Edgar C., Joseph M., Thomas M., Leo C. Jr., Robert B. McNamara, Michael J. McNamara, sons Sean T. McNamara, Terence J. McNamara.
Family and friends will gather at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church located at 14598 Oakridge Road, Carmel, Indiana 46032 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday May 12th. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Indianapolis.
