Saturday, May 18th, 2019 at the age of 95. Born June 8, 1923 in Selma, Alabama, Muriel was
raised in New Orleans, Louisiana before later relocating to the Midwest.
Muriel was educated at various higher learning institutions including Tuskegee Institute. She
was employed in social work as a caseworker for the State of Illinois in Springfield until her
retirement.
Muriel was very active in Unity Church of Springfield, Illinois as a member, volunteer, and prayer
partner. Her civic involvement included serving as a crisis hotline volunteer, cooking for the
homeless, spending time with hospice patients, and mentoring to many. She enjoyed singing,
playing the piano, participating in an African drumming circle, and dancing as a member of the
Illinois Blues Association.
Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32- "Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents Roger William Coleman and Vera Leigh Sayles as
well as her children Peggy and Joseph. She is survived by eldest daughter, Muriel, youngest
daughter, Misty, several grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren and great great
grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held by the family.
