John Sampson Medley, a dedicated husband, father, brother, and military veteran, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in Fishers, Indiana, at the age of 85. A visitation to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208. A heartfelt service will follow at 1:00 PM.
Born on May 26, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John was the beloved son of Margaret H. Medley and Chester J. Telafarro. He most recently resided in Fishers, Indiana.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sugi Medley, his devoted daughter, Margaret Williamson, and her husband, Brandon Williamson, as well as his cherished step-daughters, Melissa Gardner and Jessica Russ, and their respective husbands, Marv Gardner and Adam Russ. He is also survived by his brother, Abby Medley, and leaves behind a legacy of love and leadership to his five adored grandchildren.
The military played a significant role in John's life, as he dedicated 32 years of service to the United States Army, retiring as a Sergeant Major (SGM) in the finance corps in 1988. His military journey began with an overseas assignment in Okinawa and led him to various posts, including the 101st Airborne Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade, and 82nd Airborne Division. John served two tours in Vietnam and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, El Paso, Texas, Panama, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. His exemplary service earned him numerous accolades, including the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, three Meritorious Service Awards, and five Army Commendations.
John was not only a military veteran but also an accomplished scholar. He earned a Master's of Business Administration (MBA) from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1992 and a Doctorate of Administration and Management (PhD) from Walden University in 1997. John held several esteemed certifications, including Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Defense Financial Manager (CDFM), Certified Government Finance Manager (CGFM), and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).
Beyond his military and academic achievements, John was known for his passion for working with people. He tirelessly responded to and resolved issues, adding value to the lives of many people. Throughout his military career he mentored and positively influenced hundreds of soldiers and civilian employees through his expert teaching and communication skills. Many of these people eventually rose to the very top of the finance corps operational structure. Among his finance colleagues, he was revered as a legend in the Finance Corps.
