Joan H. Snyder, 94, of Camby, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Joan was born August 5, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Florin and Hilda (Lange) Krueger. On November 5, 1949, she married Wayne McQuern Snyder of Zionsville.
Before marrying Wayne, Joan had attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. She maintained a lifelong interest in visual art.
After Wayne had spent time in England as a soldier during World War II, Joan visited England with Wayne. She kept a map of the Avon Ring on a wall in her home for the rest of her life. She and Wayne owned an English sports car, a ‘56 MGA that Wayne had restored with their son, William. During the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, Wayne and Joan drove the MGA at rallies along with other members of the Hoosier A’s MGA enthusiast club.
With Wayne, William, and her daughter Debra, she cared for and enjoyed the company of an English Springer Spaniel, Buck. Wayne and Joan later took great pride in an Alaskan Malamute named Tug and, after Tug had passed away, their Westie named Beau.
After her time as a Registrar at the Christian Theological Seminary, Joan began working as a bookkeeper at The Accent Shop, a well-known gift shop in Indianapolis. She worked at The Accent Shop for almost 40 years, retiring in January of 2020. She was a member of the Indianapolis National Association of Accountants.
Joan performed various roles as a volunteer during the more than 60 years that she attended Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She also served for a time on the Board of Directors of the International Center of Indianapolis.
Joan made many friends, among them business owners, artists, and scholars. She made excellent shortbread cookies, enjoyed outdoor sports like skiing and golfing, and could trace her heritage to the Prussian aristocracy.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Debra (Steve) Hacker, 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; son, William; and siblings, Geraldine Green, Ralph Krueger, and Robert Krueger.
A gathering will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 5-8 PM at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3650 W. 106th Street, Carmel, Indiana 46032.
