Jesse Milton Cofer, son of Churchill Cofer and Florence Cofer was born on October 22, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the second of two children and was affectionately called by his middle name, Milton.
He received his primary and secondary education in the Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1957. After attending Herron School of the Arts, Jesse Milton entered the United States Army in 1961. During his service, he enjoyed traveling abroad while stationed in Europe. He served in both Germany and Denmark and was honorably discharged in 1963.
He and Linda Trabue were married in January 1962. They were married for almost 52 years and recently celebrated their 50th year anniversary in Las Vegas. Although they traveled domestically and abroad, their favorite vacation spot was Miami, Florida. Milton was an avid athlete, who cycled and golfed regularly. He looked forward to meeting up with friends for early morning tee times at the Golf Club of Indiana where he was a member for many years.
Jesse Milton was employed at General Motors (Chevrolet Truck & Bus Division). He started as a welder and quickly rose from the ranks to become a divisional General Foreman. He was one of the first African Americans to hold this position at Chevrolet Truck & Bus and retired in June 1992 after 31 years of service.
Jesse Milton Cofer departed this earthly life on Friday, August 2nd, 2013. He was 74 years old. He leaves to cherish his loving memory; wife, Linda Cofer; two children, Chere Cofer and Jene Cofer-Phillips; son-in-law, Daniel Phillips; two grandchildren, Myles Phillips and Bailey Phillips and a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Churchill and Florence Cofer and sister Carolyn Jones.
