Jean Merealle Majors Jackson, 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday September 23, 2020 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Jean was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Lacy Kenneth Majors and Pearl Martin Majors on August 9, 1931. She went to school in Indianapolis. She married Sylvester Earl Rowe II and to this union a son, Sylvester Earl Rowe III, was born. Later she married James Ernest Jackson and to this union a
son, Terrence James Jackson, was born.
She graduated from Crispus Attucks and Indiana University in Bloomington where she studied math, chemistry, and physics. While attending IU, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in 1952. She took her knowledge and love for science to Methodist Hospital for 10 years, where she became the first African American to work in the chemistry lab. There she conducted research and analyzed blood. She then got a job at Winona Hospital’s lab, where she worked for 25 years.
Jean marched with Martin Luther King Jr in Washington DC, met four US presidents and crusaded with Billy Graham. She took care of several family members in her lifetime, most notably her brother LLoyd. She was a very faithful member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for 80 years. There she served on the Usher Board for many years and in other organizations. Jean dedicated her life to helping others in whatever capacity she could.
Jean is preceded in death by her siblings: Mable Majors Brown, Elizabeth Majors Hardester, Howard James Majors, Dorothy Majors Brooks, Lloyd Alexander Majors Sr, Otha Ed Majors, and Lola Majors.
Jean is survived by her two sons: Sylvester Earl Rowe III and Terrence James Jackson (Neesha); grandchildren: Briana Monique Rowe, Savannah Sherron Rowe, and Sylvester Earl Rowe IV; great-grandchildren Eric D Scott Jr, Elijah D Scott, Exavier D Scott; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
