Evana Downing, beloved mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt and cousin passed away at home on August 17th 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 93. She was born on January 17th 1928 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to George Jefferson Sr. and Georgia Mae Knox-Jefferson (Spann). Both parents and a brother George Jefferson Jr. preceded her in death.
Evana was united in marriage to Mr. William Harrison Downing Sr. of Glasgow, Kentucky and to this union 10 children were born four sons and six daughters. Mr. William H. Downing Sr. who preceded her in death; in addition - two sons preceded her in death William Harrison Downing Jr.
and Charles Downing; and, two daughters – Vera Mae Bronaugh (Detroit, Michigan) and Janet Kay Downing-McGowan (Atlanta, Georgia).
Evana leaves to cherish her memories, two sisters, Juanita Viers and Ola Gamble Quarles, both from Indianapolis, Indiana; two sons, Richard and Steve Downing (Doris) all of Indianapolis, Indiana and four daughters, Maggie Pat Robinson, Anita Downing-Overton, Karen Sharp (Eric) and Joyce Downing-Harris (Carl) -all of Indianapolis, Indiana; numerous grandchildren; great and great-great-grandchildren. Honorary sons Lonnie Washington and Irvin Brimmage. Honorary daughter Margo Dawson; and special friend Mr. Ted Hurt all of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Evana will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a very compassionate, loving and nurturing woman. Evana loved her family! They were her pride and joy. She was a “matriarch” of the Downing Family and the Haughville Community as well.
Funeral and Celebration of Life services will be held on; Friday; August 27th 2021. Viewing 10:00AM – 12:00 Noon; Funeral at 12:00 Noon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church; 1301 N. Goodlet Avenue; Indianapolis, Indiana 46222. Burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crown Hill Funeral Home.
