She attended Round Hill and Waco Elementary Schools in Tennessee and later moved with her mother and younger brother Luther to Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of fourteen. She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School, Indianapolis, Indiana.
On August 25, 1959, Doris married George Grant and they were united for 60 years. He proceeded her in death, March 31, 2020. They had three children, Walter Riley, Yvette Grant Ragland and Juanita Denise Grant.
She loved caring for people and was employed as a Nurse at: Winona Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital, Methodist Hospital and was a Home Health Aide until she retired.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was a member of Mount Mariah Baptist Church and served on the Nurses Board and sang in the choir with her brother, James Duke. Later, she moved her membership to Mt. Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church, to assist her brother, Pastor Dan Duke. She served faithfully under this ministry for several years and diligently studied the word of God. She was appointed as the Head of the Sunday School Department, of which she taught the adult class every week. She was also a member of the Mother's Board, Choir, Nurses Board and as a Church Administrator.
Doris loved to sing, and at any given moment she would break out in song, with her harmonious voice resonating throughout her home. She set the atmosphere for praise and worship and instilled in her children the importance of living a holy and clean life. Some of her favorite songs were: God can make a way out of no way, It's my desire to do thy will and I Won't Complain.
Doris was often invited to church events and banquets to render song selections. She never hesitated to serve the Lord. While other kids were outside playing on Sundays, her children were at church all day on Sunday and during the week whenever the church doors were open.
Doris' immeasurable faith in God, led her in continuing her religious education and accepted her calling to the ministry. She attended Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, IN and became an anointed bible scholar and received her Minister's License.
Doris' ministry expanded while visiting hospitals and nursing homes every week. Under God's anointing power Evangelist Grant prayed for the sick and preached the gospel; many were saved, healed, and delivered. It did not matter how small the situation she was always willing to pray for anyone. She followed it up with bible scriptures and counseling, whether you wanted to hear it or not.
In the early 1980s Doris joined Cathedral of Praise Bibleway, COGIC and obtained her Evangelist License under Church of God in Christ, Inc. Evg. Grant continued preaching and performing missionary work. She was employed at the church and assisted with administering a Substance Abuse Program sponsored program by Vincennes University.
Doris brought the southern style of life with her from Tennessee and loved growing fresh vegetables in her back yard. She cooked the best hot water corn bread, homemade biscuits, fried green tomatoes and sweet potato pies from scratch!
As her health declined, she later joined Temple of Praise Assembly, Bishop Donald L. Golder with her family and served on the Nurse's board.
