Carolyn was the first child born to the union of the late Willie J. and late Marguerite L. Quarles on September 17, 1949 in Indianapolis Indiana. Carolyn received her education in the Indianapolis Public School System at Grade School 41 and went on later to graduate from Shortridge High School. Carolyn also took some business courses at IUPUI to improve the quality of life for herself and her family. Carolyn was a dedicated employee at VA Medical Administration, where she retired after 30 years of service as an Administrative Assistant. If asked, Carolyn would firmly tell you that she was a Christian and she believed in Jesus. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and was baptized at a young age at First Baptist Church North Indianapolis. Carolyn had an affinity for music and would either play music from her huge CD collection or attend the concerts of her favorite artists. The last concert that she was able to attend was Bruno Mars and she said, “I love that boy, he’s fine and he was worth every penny!” Carolyn always loved a good party, whether she was the hostess at her house or guest at yours it did not matter, she was a happy camper either way. You could not keep Carolyn away from the card table and she was an avid Pinochle and Bid Wiz player all her life, often having friends come over to play, eat and fellowship.
She had two special card partners that she built a special bond with after playing with them for many years, Lamar Peterson (deceased) and Donald Miller. Carolyn was eclectic in her travels and took many trips on both land and sea. She was very adventurous. Once, she and her now deceased friend, Arlen, took a 90 day trip and drove across the country, stopping to visit friends and explore sites along the way! Carolyn took joy in providing those close to her a blow by blow account of her comings and goings via her picture post on Facebook. Carolyn believed in “the village” and had many “circle of sisters” friendships/relationships that are not possible to list individually, but spanned from 10 to 50 years. The
longest of these being Gloria, Karen, Vivi and Ruthie who Carolyn gave the title of “auntie” when talking about them to her children and who will always be thought of as extended family.
Carolyn wore many hats in her life but the one she wore as a Mother/ Momma and Nana were her favorite! Even when she was mad, she always said she was proud of each of her children. Carolyn will always be loved and missed by those she leaves to cherish her memory; four children, Sheila Quarles, Elmer Quarles, Shavonne Hartwell (Shawn) and Paul Sebree III (Amelia); six grandchildren, Brittani
Maxie, Antoinette Harrell, Najae Quarles, Anthony Harrell II, Janel Quarles (deceased) and Ja’Brean Woodard; four great-grandchildren, Autumn Smith, Aaron Brown Jr., Aaliyah Battles and Ja’Nila Woodard; one brother, Steven Quarles; and a surrogate daughter, Kimberly McCollough; along
with a host of other relatives and friends.
