Carolyn Mitchell, also known as Nana, was born on June 13, 1939 to Ted Hawkins and Lillian Irene Franklin in Indianapolis, Indiana. She grew up in Lockefield Gardens, and attended Crispus Attucks High School. She worked various jobs and retired as a home health care giver. Nana loved spending time with her family. Going camping, spending time on holidays or just for no reason at all was some of the things she liked to do with her time. One of her many hobbies were doing ceramics where she received a first-place award. Nana was known for decorating her home for the holidays and keeping her yard immaculate. She also won first place for her yard. She enjoyed being in the kitchen cooking, baking, and canning. Nana loved her grandchildren, and they could do no wrong in her eyes.
Carolyn was preceded in death by husband Earnest Mitchell, two sons: Joe Allen Smith Jr, and Reginald Thomas Smith, two step-sons: Anthony W. Hornbeak Sr., and Keith Johnson Sr., Grandchildren: Joi Evon Rowe, Jemel Gant, siblings: Reginald Franklin, Clyde Ashby Jr, Anne Ashby, Jackie Ashby, and nephew: Reginald Franklin Jr.
Carolyn was survived by her three children Robin Miller (Kieth), Robert Johnson III, and Vashni Vaughn. Her siblings Joyce Coleman, Patricia Dowdell, Carol Jones, and Clyde D. Williams. Grandchildren Anthony W. Hornbeak Jr., Antoinette Hornbeack Smith (Lee), Kimani Sims, Kiesha Smith, Carmin Edwards (Williams), Bentley Smith (Ashley), Desiree Cornner, Torrin Harris, Dexter Smith (Toni), Raishunda Miller (Bryant), Christina Tumblin (Justin), Reginald Smith II, Diahntae Warren (Tanika). Forty great grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
Carolyn will be carried by Robert Lee Johnson III, and will be laid to rest beside Robert Lee Johnson Jr. She is to be interred at New Crown Cemetery, Indianapolis IN.
