Carol Lee Johnston

Carol Lee (Shaner) Johnston, 86, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at home. A life-long resident of Indianapolis, she was born on January 13, 1936 to Lora Albert and Irene Katherine (Niedenthal) Shaner. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Carol worked for thirty-four years at Eli Lilly and worked in the international product registration department before she retired in 1993. Everyone who met her was struck by her kindness, strength, and gentle sense of humor. She was devoted to service after her retirement, giving her time and energy to Meals on Wheels, Executive Service Corps, and the Indiana State Museum. Carol loved relaxing to good jazz music and making meaningful memories with her beloved family and friends. Carol leaves behind to cherish her memory: her daughter, Kathryn; her son, Scott; her nephews, Mike, Jeff, and David Shaner, and their families; her cousins; and many life-long friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Donald Shaner, her significant other, Russ Hagerman, and her dear friend, Marge O’Laughlin. The family would like to thank Ascension St. Vincent Hospital and Compassus Hospice for their wonderful care as Carol made her transition with the same positive spirit she exhibited throughout her life. A Celebration of Carol’s life will be: Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Leppert Mortuary, 740 East 86th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
