A lifelong lover of law, he worked for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department since 1982, after graduating from Huntington North High School and Indiana University. He retired as a lieutenant in 2014. The Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Police, and St. Matthew Catholic Church counted him among their members.
His other passions included playing and watching golf, cooking for his family, spending time with and texting his kids, and being a Republican. Brian enjoyed his daily cigar as well as all things Arnold Palmer, John Wayne, and Ronald Reagan.
He’s preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Tracy (Hartman) Smart, and their children, Sarah (Jal Hastings), Colin (Marisol), and Eileen. He is also survived by his siblings, Michelle Lael of Ft. Wayne, Joni (Lee) Schmalzried of Huntington, and David (Jennifer) Smart of Pella, Iowa, as well as 5 nieces and 2 nephews. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 22, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 E 56th St., Indianapolis. Visitation will be Sunday, January 21, 2–6 p.m., at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E 71st St., Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church in support of Dr. Ellen Einterz’s Cameroon Mission. Memorials may be made through feeneyhornakkeystone.com.
