On Tuesday November 15, 2022, Muriel Inez Gordon (Nelson), widow of Jerome Nelson passed away peacefully in her sleep at the wonderful age of 98 years while briefly in Indian Head Prairie View Care Home.
Muriel leaves to mourn her son Gordon (Indian Head), daughter Irene (Parksville, BC), son Michael and wife Tammy (Saskatoon) & grandchildren Cody and Tassia.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband Jerome, brothers Gordon and Raymond Curts, sisters Norma (Miller) and Lorraine (Gibbons), sisters-in-law Elsie and Erma Curts, brothers-in-law Gerry Gibbons and Harold Miller.
Muriel was born on September 18, 1924 and was raised on a farm near Odessa. She was the second eldest child of Fred and Ethel Curts. Muriel spent her early years gardening, berry picking, helping with the chores of the farm and sold cream to the co-op. In 1951 she married Jerome Nelson and lived in Radville. In 1965 Jerome and Muriel moved to Indian Head. Muriel worked at the PFRA doing seasonal employment and at the Orange Home taking care of pre-school children along with odd jobs, cleaning homes etc. In 1972 the family moved to Windsor Ontario as Jerome pursued his work in sales. Muriel and Jerome returned to their prairie roots in 1975. After returning to Indian Head, Jerome and Muriel moved to Alida, where they ran the Alida Hotel. Muriel did the books, cooked, cleaned, and ran the room rentals along with many other duties involved in hotel ownership. They sold the hotel in 1983 and purchased a garage and fuel business in Fosston, along with Gordon the eldest son. Jerome passed away in 1989 and the business was closed. Jerome and Muriel had a house in Rose Valley where she remained living. She met John Strochen and they moved a house out to Greenwater lake area where John had a small farm. John became ill with cancer and Muriel moved him with her to Indian Head. After John’s passing she remained in Indian Head for a number of years. Muriel met and eventually married Eric Gordon whom she resided with at his farm in Gainborough. Eric retired, sold the farm and they moved to Stoughton. They lived there for 3 years and sold the house and moved to Grenfell. Eric became frail and was moved into care in the Grenfell home and Muriel returned once again to her Indian Head roots. She had a nice suite by Hayes Haven that she thoroughly enjoyed, especially visiting with her kind neighbours, and lived happily there for many years. Once she could no longer care for herself, although adamantly independent, she moved into Wolseley Lakeside Nursing Home in June of this year and anxiously awaited her transfer into Golden Prairie Care Home in Indian Head as she firmly conveyed “that’s where all my people are.” She moved in the beginning of November, satisfied and at peace and passed away in her sleep on November 15, 2022.
Muriel loved to visit and enjoyed a good party with music and laughter. She attended many country music (fiddle) jamborees and loved to dance which she did well into her 80’s even attending exercise classes into her nineties. She was a keen knitter and crocheter and liked a good card game. She closely followed the political news and appreciated a good debate. Muriel had a gentle, wise, determined nature and was an entertaining straight shooter that didn’t mince her words.
Mur’s celebration of life will be held in Indian head in the Spring.
