He spent his early life and education in Molten, Iowa, and graduated from Molten High School.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War. During the Korean War he was wounded and received the Purple Heart, along with other medals of valor during his military service. He retired from the Military in 1968 after 20 years of service to his country.
He married Margaret E. Hartley on May 27, 1950, in Lancaster, Missouri. They were married for 65 years.
He worked for the Post Office in Escondido, California, and for the State of Idaho Blackfoot South, which he retired from in 1996. He served as City Councilman for the City of Firth, was a member of American Legion, VFW, DAV, NCO enlisted men, Vietnam Members, Fleet Reserve and the Marine Corp League.
He loved his grandkids, family and dogs. He was the strongest, bravest, loving man ever.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Buchholz of Blackfoot; his daughter, Judy (Sheroden) Waters of Idaho Falls; two sons, David (Susan) Buchholz, and Kevin (Ursalla Snieder) Buchholz, both of Idaho Falls; seventeen grandchildren, forty-seven great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald Keith Buchholz Jr., his daughter Diana Buchholz, his parents and seven sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street in Idaho Falls, with Pastor Bob Sherwood, officiating. Burial will follow at Taylor Cemetery, with Military Rites by the Bonneville County Veterans. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2015, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service.
