Marjorie Pickowitz Jensen

CENTERVILLE- Marjorie Pickowitz Jensen, 70, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 25, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Garye D. Jensen, with whom she shared many years of marriage.

Born in Uncasville, CT, Marjorie was a daughter of the late Henry and Anne (Dislo) Pickowitz. She was a graduate of St. Bernard’s High School and went on to attend St. Francis Nursing School. She received a master’s degree from Webster University.

Marge enjoyed a sterling Military Career. Due to her extensive nursing experience with complicated illnesses she worked at Air Force Medical Centers and in Addition was a Medical Crew Director for transporting patients by aeromedical airlift from Japan, Korea and the Philippines aboard cargo aircraft by to Army Tripler Hospital in Hawaii. Tapped for her experience once again, During Desert Shield/Storm she taught flight Nursing and battlefield Nursing to active duty and Reserve nurses at the School of Aerospace Medicine is San. Antonio Texas. While assigned to the 375th Aeromedical Evacuation Wing Scott AFB Illinois She was the first Aeromedical Evacuation Training officer assigned to develop programs for assisting Active Duty, Reserves and Air National guard units with their Aeromedical Evacuation training programs. In addition she actively worked with others to help Women receive much needed recognition for their contributions to Military Service, as evidenced by the Dedicated Arlington Cemetery Gate recognizing their service. An additional example is the time and effort she put into ensuring the success of a 50th Anniversary recognition of WWII. Because she was such a great organizer, her Superior Officers assigned her to help with this project, she invited Flight Nurses from WWII, Korea and Vietnam so they would receive recognition and much deserved Honor for their Service to our Country. The keynote speaker at this event standing in for his Dad, was our future president George W. Bush. She ended her Air Force career as assistant Director of Medical Nursing from Wilford Hall Medical Center to return back to her Roots to help the Family care for her elderly father.

In her spare time, Marjorie enjoyed camping, gardening and shopping, particularly at Garage sales and consignment stores. Marjorie devoted many years to being a volunteer; as a marriage counselor at her church, as well as with the food pantry. Above all, family was most important to Marjorie. She loved nothing more than being “Gum” to her wonderful grandchildren.

Marjorie is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband, Garye D. Jensen; her children, Anne Villano (Sean), David R. Jensen (Elizabeth), stepson Garye S. Jensen, and stepson Damian Jensen; seven grandchildren; a sister, Kathy Sullivan (Roger); and two brothers, David Pickowitz (Kathy), and Anthony Pickowitz (Cindy).

Marjorie was predeceased by her stepson, Christopher M. Jensen.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, December 1st from 5 to 7 p.m. at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, December 2nd at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 S. Main St., Centerville. Burial will take place at a later date in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie's name to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA 02215.
