Born in Framingham, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph Francis and Joan Marie Doherty. He graduated from Rockville High School in Vernon, CT and went on to attend Eastern Connecticut State University as well as Cape Cod Community College.
Joe played ice hockey in his youth as well as into his adulthood. He always enjoyed following Boston sports teams, fishing, and spending summer days at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet. He had a love of life, a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends, especially his beloved son, Jett.
Joe retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 18 years, working primarily as a Clerk in the West Hyannis Port Post Office. He was a jack-of-all trades, having worked as a cook, in construction, and in the tobacco fields as a young boy.
Joe is survived by his son, Jett Cobb Doherty, his former wife, Heather MacRobbie Doherty, his sisters, Christine Orcutt and Lynne Doherty, his nephews Connor and Brendan Horgan and Cameron Orcutt, and his nieces Kathleen Frank and Kelley Orcutt. He was predeceased by his sister, Maureen Horgan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MSPCA-Cape Cod, 1577 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.
Arrangements are under the care of Doane, Beal & Ames in Hyannis. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
