She was born to the late Channin A. and Ruth E. Peach, April 30, 1929, in Wrentham, MA. Claire graduated from Foxboro High School in 1947. And received her BA degree in Social Studies from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1951. She was married to John H. McHugh for 61 years and lived in Hyannis and wintered in Arcadia, Florida.
Claire was an elementary school teacher in the Barnstable Public Schools and taught at Hyannis West Elementary for many years. Claire was an active member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, Hyannis Yacht Club, and Hyannis Garden Club.
An avid gardener and artistic flower arranger she will be remembered for her beautiful altar arrangements at church. Claire treasured her Bridgewater classmates and their weekend retreats and travels. She had a dry sense of humor and loved spending time doing everyday things with her grandchildren.
Claire is survived by her husband, John, and two daughters, Lynne Gehling (Jerry) of Wayzata, MN and Cindy Baxter (Charles), Saline, MI. She is also survived by her 4 cherished grandchildren: Channin Baxter, Charlotte Baxter, Elise Gehling, and Kate Gehling.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to either the Mission Fund at The Federated Church, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601 or the Arcadia Center for the Needy of DeSoto, Inc., P.O. Box 3020, Arcadia, FL, 34265.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 27th from 4-7 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis. A memorial service will be held at the Federated Church, 320 Main St., Hyannis, on Sat., Nov. 28th at 10:00 a.m. Private family internment.
